Alpine Litter Humification and Its Response to Reduced Snow Cover: Can More Carbon Be Sequestered in Soils?

نویسندگان

چکیده

While carbon loss from plant litter is well understood, the mechanisms by which this sequestered in decomposing substrate remains unclear. Here we assessed humus accumulations five foliar litters during four years of decomposition and their responses to reduced snow cover an alpine forest. In contrast traditional understanding (i.e., three-stage model), found that fresh had a high content (8–13% across species), consistently increased such increase primarily depended on accumulation humic acid. Further, decreased at early stages but it late stages. These results suggested humification simultaneously occurred with decay, process was more sensitive changing climate seasonally snow-covered ecosystems, as previously expected.

Mapping Snow Cover in Alpine Areas with Envisat/sar Images

RESUME It has been established that optical and near-infrared sensors can monitor the seasonal variations of snow cover in alpine areas in cloud free conditions. However, only microwave sensors are able to acquire data independently of day light and in adverse weather conditions. The effects of dry snow on currently available C-band SAR data are rather small and difficult to detect. On the cont...

Soil Fauna Affects Dissolved Carbon and Nitrogen in Foliar Litter in Alpine Forest and Alpine Meadow

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) are generally considered important active biogeochemical pools of total carbon and nitrogen. Many studies have documented the contributions of soil fauna to litter decomposition, but the effects of the soil fauna on labile substances (i.e., DOC and TDN) in litter during early decomposition are not completely clear. Therefore, a f...

Alpine Snow Cover and Glaciers in Relation to Altitude from Advanced Satellite Monitoring

Advanced methods of Landsat-TM data processing were used to map periodically the seasonal snow cover and glaciers. The test basins are located in western, eastern and southern Swiss Alps. In the basins of the rivers Rhône at Sion (3371 km2, 488-4634 m a.s.l.), Rhine at Felsberg (3249 km2, 562-3614 m a.s.l.) and Ticino at Bellinzona (1515 km2, 220-3402 m a.s.l.) relations were derived between th...

Can unequal be more fair? A response to Andrew Avins.

In this paper, we respond to Andrew Avins's recent review of methods whose use he advocates in clinical trials, to make them more ethical. He recommends in particular, "unbalanced randomisation". However, we argue that, before such a recommendation can be made, it is important to establish why unequal randomisation might offer ethical advantages over equal randomisation, other things being equa...
